Krill Oil Benefits Major Depression

Major Depression is a huge problem and it’s growing.  Among all age groups major depression is the number one psychological disorder in the western world today. The NIMH states that at its current rate of increase by the year 2020 major depression will be the second most disabling condition in the world.

The evidence of the escalation of major depression clearly shows that the first line of treatment associated with the use of antidepressants has resulted in sometimes only masking the symptoms; it has done little to improve an individual’s quality of life or prevent depression free lives.


I believe the key is to tackle major depression at its root.  We need to look at alternatives to drugs that provide us an effective solution that prevents depression from taking hold over and over again.  This is where drug treatments are failing and a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids high in DHA and EPA are playing a crucial role.  PubMed documents Evidence from epidemiological laboratory and clinical studies suggesting that dietary lipids and other associated nutritional factors may influence vulnerability and outcome in depressive disorders.  It was also stated that omega3 DHA and EPA nutritional influences on Major Depression are being clearly underestimated.


The studies showed there were 2 major areas significantly influenced by the intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

  • Neuronal Membranes

Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential component of central nervous system membrane phospholipid acyl chains and are critical to the dynamic structure and function of neuronal membrane

  • Cytokine Modulation (pro-inflammatory immune chemicals)

Omega-3 fatty acids may exert significant influence in major depression thru cytokine modulation.  These cytokines can have direct and indirect effects on the central nervous system.


Today’s diets are very imbalanced between omega-6 and omega -3 fatty acids.  This imbalance has created the many negative results on aging, inflammation and stress on our bodies.   This imbalance has also been shown to be the potential cause of many inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, cancers and cardiovascular disease. Researches have also been able to show that there is a direct correlation between major depression and cardiovascular disease with omega-3 importance being the common link.  It is not to be taken lightly. The excessive intake of omega -6 fatty acids has compromised the body’s ability to convert nutrients our body needs to maintain our overall health.  A number of studies shown in PubMed support a connection between dietary fish consumption and lower prevalence of depression, this being due to a more balanced relationship between omega6/omega3 in take.  However many warnings have been given on the immense amount of pollutants and toxins that are being found in fish. 

So what’s a person to do?

The solution is Krill Oil.  Krill are at the bottom of the food chain and the largest mass in the world’s oceans. These little crustations are the richest source of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA today.  Their natural antioxidants are the most powerful fighters against free radicals such as toxins or pollutants. This antioxidant strength is what increases krill oils bio-availability of omega-3s.  Krill oil and fish oil are essentially similar with the exception that krill oil contains phospholipids, and also more EPA per gram than fish oil. A recent study showed that krill oil significantly improved depressive symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.  Fish oil showed no significant change in mood or disposition.  This suggest that the presence of the phospholipids and possibly the higher amount of EPA may be why krill oil is more effective than fish oil.

Krill Oil Benefits are showing very effective in the positive influence of Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA for brain function and the central nervous system because of its phospholipid structure and abundance of antioxidant power.
